The Magnum Foundation fosters creativity and diversity in documentary photography, activating new audiences and ideas through the innovative use of images. Through grant-making, mentoring, and creative collaborations, we partner with socially engaged image-makers experimenting with new models for storytelling.

MF’s experimental labs create space for playful exploration and experimentation in the sharing, exhibiting, and creative distribution of socially engaged documentary photography. Labs bring photographers into conversation with experts in related disciplines and set up conditions for imaginative engagement with emergent concepts and tools. The intention of the labs is to not only create opportunities for individual project development, but also to inspire innovation in the spirit of expanding possibilities for the activation of documentary photography and socially engaged visual storytelling more broadly.

This application is for Magnum Foundation grantees to express interest in our experimental lab, which will take place during the fall of 2025 via Zoom in a time zone that works for all chosen participants.

The program will include two online sessions; one in September and one in October. Each session will include two consecutive mornings of programming. The September session will focus on presentations, looking at exemplary projects for learning and inspiration, and developing a project sketch of a prototype to work on over the month. The October session will include work presentations, where participants will share with one another what they’ve prototyped. A small group of participants who create successful prototypes and demonstrate ingenuity in their plans to activate audiences will be invited to a third session in November to share their work with a panel of advisors, potential funders, and possible production partners.

There will be up to 15 applicants selected to participate in the lab. Lab participants should come with a completed photographic project that they hope to expand with new creative distribution approaches.

Please apply via Submittable . Applications are due Thursday, July 10th by 11:59pm ET. Applicants will be notified July 30th.
